Fire Season Begins June 1, 2024

Start of Fire Season 2024

Fire season in Jackson and Josephine counties begins on June 1, 2024, at 12:01 a.m., with the fire danger level set to "Low" and the Industrial Fire Precaution Level at I. This affects 1.8 million acres of various lands, including state, private, and BLM forestlands. Spring weather delayed the onset of fires, but since mid-March, the Oregon Department of Forestry’s Southwest Oregon District has dealt with 14 human-caused fires, covering just over 10 acres.

Regulations starting with the fire season include prohibitions on debris burning, fireworks near protected lands, exploding targets, and tracer ammunition. Campfires are allowed only in designated areas or with landowner permission, and smoking is restricted to certain areas. Electric fence controllers must meet safety standards. Industrial activities will also face regulations under IFPL I, including mandatory Firewatch.
